No, it’s not another blog you read about success stories!
It’s my experience in my words.
My name is Akansha Mehra, and I am a Sr. Content writer by profession. Well, though I still believe myself to be a content writer, I am currently heading the Content Team of my Company, and I no longer write articles as a part of my job.
Well – that is what I do now!
Around 15 years back when I started my career after my Masters in Commerce, I wasn’t this confident about my abilities. My first job was in an ITes company as a content writer. I was quite aware that to be a content writer – one needs to have a degree in English or Mass Communication. I was a Commerce graduate and in that way, I wasn’t even qualified for the job.
However, fortunately, things turned well, and I managed to survive as a content writer. I soon became a group leader, a team leader and finally was heading the content team. However, I still felt something amiss.
I needed something more!
My dad suggested a management degree!
I always wanted to do an MBA but due to many reasons, I couldn’t pursue it. I loved what my dad suggested but at the same time – my job?
No, I couldn’t leave my job – this was when I turned to online courses.
Distance Education or Online Education
In India, around 7-8 years back online courses were not that common. These were unheard of and people usually did not believe that online courses or distance education could actually contribute much to career growth. Still, in India, IGNOU or Indira Gandhi National Open University is the trusted university and best known for offering online degrees and diplomas. They offer degrees in a wide range of subjects.
I decided to go for it. I would get an MBA degree without having to leave my job.
But again, there was a condition. For an MBA degree, there were two conditions. One needed to pass their admission test and provide a certificate of employment.
Online Examination
So, I had to study a lot and it wouldn’t be smooth sailing for me! Well – I did study – it was all about mathematics, general knowledge, reasoning, English. I did manage to pass and got admission for my MBA.
MBA in HR – The Degree that Gave me the Confidence
My three years of the course passed in a flash. Yes, it was hectic and was no cake-walk. Plenty and plenty of assignments, projects, subjects, lessons, examinations and a lot more. I got certificates at every stage. My course was completed in less than four years and I became an MBA in no time.
So, my experience – I will put down a few things from my experience:
Myth 1 – You do not have to study in distance education.
It’s a myth. You have to study and work harder because you are not attending classrooms. What is the use of the degree when you do not have any knowledge on the subject? Will it give you confidence when you join any office or work? If you choose to study from IGNOU, you have to work hard.
Myth 2 – Everyone passes – no one fails
No, this is absolutely wrong. If you choose to study from IGNOU, you have to work hard and people do fail. I have seen people multiple times in subjects like Mathematics, Accountancy and Costing.
Myth 3 – Exams are irregular
No, exams are held twice a year. In case you miss a session, you can appear in the same year again. We would have exams in the month of June and again in December
Myth 4 – Are exams online?
It was not the COVID situation then – so we would give our exams in the classrooms.
How Did I gain from my MBA degree?
Well, I do not work as an HR manager and I knew this would be the situation when I took admission in the course. My MBA degree gave me confidence – I now know that I am skilled, qualified and knowledgeable. I am ready to head a team and I do that with confidence.
It definitely has given a boost to my CV. My probable employers are aware that it’s a distance education program. They also know that I did my MBA because I wanted to be qualified.
